Gani, (Major) Abdul (1919-1957) born in village Nagaish of Burichang upazila, Comilla in 1919, Major Abdul Gani was the founding father of the famous East Bengal Regiment. Gani received his early education in Comilla and graduated from Calcutta Islamia College in 1940. In 1941, he passed the King's Commission to join the British Indian Army as a lieutenant and fought on the Burma Front for two years. For his valour shown in the Burma Front of the Second World War, he was called 'Tiger Gani'.



Major Abdul Gani played the leading role in founding a Bengali Army Unit in 1945. After the partition of 1947, he opted East Bengal with his army unit. In 1948, Gani became a major and was authorised to establish the First East Bengal Regiment, which he formed on 15 February 1948. Abdul Gani retired in 1954 and entered into politics. He was elected to the Provincial Assembly as an independent candidate. He proposed in the Assembly the foundation of a Cadet College and military school in the then East Pakistan. Gani was vice-president of the Pakistan 'Sabuj Sena' and a member of the Islam Leauge.

Abdul Gani died on 11 November 1957 in Frankfurt where he had gone to lead the Pakistan delegation at World Veteran Soldiers' Conference. He was buried at the Mainamati Cantonment graveyard in full military honour. [Ali Nawaz]
