Hare, (Sir) Lancelot (1851-1922) the last Lieutenant Governor of the newly created province of Eastern Bengal and Assam from 1906 to 1911. Born on 7 January 1851 in London and educated at City of London School, Lancelot Hare joined the Indian Civil Service for Bengal in 1873. As a civilian he served in many Bengal districts and finally was elevated to the Governor General's Council as a member (1905-06).



On the resignation of bamfylde fuller (20 August 1906) in the face of strong opposition of the anti-partionists, Hare was appointed the Lieutenant Governor of the province of Eastern Bengal and Assam. In this capacity he served until the end of 1911 when the partition of bengal was annulled. In appreciation of his meritorious services as a civilian, Hare was decorated with CIE (1900), CSI (1906) and KCSI (1907).

Sir Lancelot Hare died on 7 October 1922. A thoroughfare in the city of Dhaka, Hare Street, was named by the Dhaka Municipality in memory of his commendable services to the people of Eastern Bengal. [Sirajul Islam]
