Mohanpur Upazila (rajshahi district) with an area of 162.65 sq km, is bounded by manda and tanore upazilas on the north, paba and durgapur (Rajshahi) upazilas on the south, bagmara upazila on the east, Tanore upazila on the west. Main rivers are Shiba and Baranai. Mohanpur (Town) consists of seven mouzas. The area of the town is 9.52 sq km. The town has a population of 9387; male 50.83% and female 49.17%; population density per sq km is 985. Literacy rate among the town people is 34%. Administration Mohanpur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1917. It consists of six union parishads, 167 mouzas and 154 villages. Archaeological heritage and relics Bishalpur Temple. Historical events During the War of Liberation in 1971 the Razakars established camp at the madrasa of village Sankoa and tortured the innocent people of this area. The freedom fighters attacked the camp in November in which six Razakars were captured and killed. Marks of War of Liberation Mass grave at the compound of the Sankoa Madrasa. Population 126396; male 50.32%, female 49.68%; Muslim 96.17%, Hindu 3% and others 0.83%; ethnic nationals: 50 Santal families living in Khasigram union. Religious institutions Mosque 308, temple 8; noted religious institutions: Saipara Jami Mosque, Keshorehat Jami Mosque. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 25.2%; male 33.6% and female 16.7%. Educational institutions: college 11, high school 22, junior high school 5, madrasa 10, government primary school 45, non-government primary school 33. Noted educational institution: Mohanpur Pilot High School (1948). Cultural organisations Club 22, public library 1, cinema hall 1 and opera party 1. Main occupations Agriculture 52.11%, fishing 2.23%, agricultural labourer 23.10%, wage labourer 1.8%, commerce 9.28%, service 2.56%, transport 1.47% and others 7.45%. Land use Total cultivable land 10740 hectares; fallow land 281.67 hectares; single crop 19%, double crop 20% and treble crop land 61%. Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 10000 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Paddy, jute, wheat, onion, garlic, potato, brinjal and betel leaf. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Sugarcane, sesame, mustard seed, barley, mashur and arahar (pigeon pea). Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, litchi, black berry and bel (wood apple). Fisheries, dairies, poultries Poultry 8. dairy 29, fishery 31, hatchery 2, nursery (fish) 12. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 50 km, semi pucca 15 km and mud road 200 km. Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct), boat. Manufactories Ice factory 5, welding 20. Cottage industries Bamboo work 250, goldsmith 200, blacksmith 50, potteries 40, wood work 25, tailoring 250. Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 14, most noted of which are Keshore Hat, Ekdil Tala, Dhopaghata and Moumachhi Hat; fairs 2, noted of which is Ras Mela. Main exports Jute, wheat and betel leaf. NGO activities Operationally important ngos are brac, asa, grameen bank, ccdb.
