Roy, Atindra Mohan (1894-1979) a revolutionary during the colonial period. He was born in village Bholachang under
nabinagar upazila of
brahmanbaria district. Son of Ananda Mohan Roy, he joined a revolutionary party while still at school. He was sent to jail and on his release became all the more revolutionary and remained so all his life. Atin Roy became intimate with the Rebel Poet kazi
nazrul islam when the latter came to Comilla. He congratulated the poet on the publication of 'Dhumketu'
- a mouthpiece for the revolutionaries. In his second year at Comilla Victoria
College, he gave up his studies and joined the Freedom Movement.
He had firm determination to liberate the country. He was well built though not a very tall man. Like other revolutionaries, he had put his faith in Gandhi's non-violence movement. He also organised an underground revolutionary group in Comilla. He and his comrades received financial help from the Maharaja of Agartala. They prepared themselves for an armed revolution in the whole of India. They procured arms from abroad with the money they got by robbing those who were loyal to the British. Shiploads of sophisticated arms were sent for the revolutionaries from Germany. The British came to know about this secret transaction. Many of the revolutionaries were arrested though Atin Roy managed to go underground. He was, however, tracked down by the police after 14 months of hiding, and sentenced to 24 years of rigorous imprisonment.
He was one of the important leaders of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP)
from the time of formation of this party in 1940. Atin Roy served as chairman of Comilla Municipality from
1946 to 1954. He had immense contribution to Comilla Abhay Ashram, Basanta Smrti Pathagar (library) and Amulya Smrti Pathagar. He became a lonely men, silent and withdrawn, spending his days in the company of books when his son Asim Roy, a demonstrator of Comilla College was shot dead during the war of liberation by the Pakistan army. He, a broken man, passed away in 1979. [Ali
