Sar-i-Laskar was an army rank during the Sultanate period in Bengal. Inscriptions of the sultans of Bengal apply three terms to the army personnel, they are Sar-i-laskar, Sar-i-khail and Jangdar. Jangdar was probably used, in general term, to mean a soldier, one-armed person who took part in battles. Sar-i-khail was a commander who had ten horsemen under him. Sar-i-laskar was a commander who was superior to Sar-i-Khail, but his rank in the army cannot be ascertained from the inscriptions. [Abdul Karim] |
